About “Shapes and Colors”
While attending an art opening, I noticed an adorable toddler doing an awkward adorable toddler walk in the space and realized there was only a blank white wall at her eye level. This inspired me to create an art show for children to be shown at their viewpoint. Through discussion with Jen Morrison we decided in order to maintain the attention of small children there would need to be an interactive component and together we came up with several such opportunities to explore. This is the first iteration of this idea, a combination of art show and family experience.

About the artist:
Laura is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in metro Atlanta. Her work often entails reusing discarded materials to create art, most often scrap steel. Laura has shown at many locations in Atlanta, most notably at Fernbank Museum of Natural History, as well as in Petersburg Virginia. She has a BFA from SCAD and creates in her home studio.

Exhibition Dates: December 13-20, 2024

Soulaan Femme explores the complex interplay between natural and performative expressions of Southern Black Femme identity through the medium of traditional portraiture. The work is rooted in a critical examination of historical and contemporary representations of Black female sexuality and body image, particularly within the context of the Deep South. Soulaan Femme reimagines Black Femme portraiture as a tool for reclamation, challenging the objectifying narratives that have long been imposed on Black women. By capturing the duality of natural expression and performative identity, the portraits seek to affirm the dignity, complexity, and autonomy of Southern Black Femme women.

This project combines traditional portraiture, personal reflections, and critical analysis to dissect and present the multifaceted nature of Black femme identity. The portraits serve as a metaphorical mirror, highlighting both the inherent qualities and the consciously performed aspects of identity that Southern Black Femme women navigate daily. This exploration addresses key questions about the role of visual representation in constructing and expressing identity, as well as the impact of cultural and societal expectations on the formation of self.

About Kourtney:
A southern native with roots in both Atlanta, Georgia, and Decatur, Alabama, Kourtney Iman is a conceptual artist with a BA in African American Studies from The University of Alabama. She is currently an MFA candidate at the Savannah College of Art and Design, specializing in Fine Arts Photography. Her work focuses on the intricate aesthetics of Black life, with a particular devotion to exploring the intersections of identity and representation.

Rachel is an interdisciplinary artist who enjoys experimenting with new materials and problem solving. Rachel will be selling earrings, sculpture and art prints.
The earrings are molded from her original sculptures, dusted with color shifting pigments and cast in a light weight epoxy clay that’s half the weight of regular plastic.

Jewelry casting demo at 3:30 pm. Charlotte will be demonstrating how she alloys gold to make white gold and rose gold as well as demonstrating the lost wax casting jewelry making process- how she turns wax into gold.

Erika will have upcycled clothing with embroidery to make the pieces more unique and fun!

Freddy will have hand made resin earrings, necklaces & keychains. He will also have a number of knives with resin handles.
Also, fabricated steel shelf brackets and tables.

Julia will have Open Studios: View in-process public sculptures and shop for a wide variety of small artworks and functional creations made by Julia Hill and friends.

Cha Metals Handmade jewelry casting demo, Open Studio, sample sale, and free ring sizing !
You will be able to purchase some sample designs, older pieces she is not going to make again, and have a peek at the new ring collection, “Portals” in person. Charlotte will also be measuring finger sizes for free.
Jewelry casting demo at 3:30 pm. Charlotte will be demonstrating how she alloys gold to make white gold and rose gold as well as demonstrating the lost wax casting jewelry making process- how she turns wax into gold.

Abby will be selling small paintings and ceramics.

✨Image 3: Aaron Artrip
Aaron will be selling drawings, paintings, prints and stickers for this year’s market. He is excited to share a new body of fun and whimsical illustrative food paintings. You can see more of his work @artrip.tv and his website, www.aaronartrip.com

Annalise will be selling Witchy Cozy hand bound journals made from old book covers.

✨Image 5: Matthew Evans
Matthew will be selling Merch by ME, which includes tie-die hoodies, embroidered sweatshirts, beanies, corduroy hats, and more. He will also be selling custom matchbooks, stickers, and rolling papers.

Erika will have upcycled clothing with embroidery to make the pieces more unique and fun!

Freddy will have hand made resin earrings, necklaces & keychains. He will also have a number of knives with resin handles.
Also, fabricated steel shelf brackets and tables.

Julia will have Open Studios: View in-process public sculptures and shop for a wide variety of small artworks and functional creations made by Julia Hill and friends.

🌀 Meet SRAS resident artist Marcelo Tabor!

Marcelo is from Atlanta and spent many summers visiting his mom's home town of Guadalajara. He said that a big part of his travels was going with his mom to see the murals of Orozco. He indicated that this style of painting really influences what he seeks to achieve in his own work.

You can check out some of Marcelo’s work in person at the following two shows in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month:

-Encuentro de Color e Historia (Collision of Color and Story) at the Mary Kistner Gallery located @aurora.theatre

-Pioneers of Change located in the atrium @douglascountygov

I had the opportunity to sit down with SRAS resident artist Annalise Nelson and here is a small peek of some cool things that are currently going on in her world.

Annalise recently finished an awarded workshop with @wdowns.studio located at @andersonranchartscenter

The new works shown here were created while attending this workshop.
Annalise describes these works as the culmination of what she learned through drawing from the subconscious, guided by William. She practiced letting her subconscious guide her to a place of doing without thinking.

Earlier this year, Annalise created Baby’s Place - a DIY Gallery & Outdoor Space offering an alternative way to be with art. Baby’s is a beautiful inviting space in a backyard amongst the trees with a welcoming shed. Annalise describes this space as a melting pot of a backyard where all art worlds fuse.
Cool events coming…photography, quilts, dance and more.

Annalise has also been building skills in custom sign painting & custom mural projects. Check out more on her page.

About the project:
The Color of the Horizon is a data-driven audio and visual installation housed in an airstream camper at South River Art Studios. The installation utilizes web cameras placed at locations worldwide where it tracks the sunrise, solar noon, and sunset. These cameras capture color data from the sky, which is then used to dynamically control the lighting inside the camper, simulating a gradient of the daytime sky.

The installation will be open from August to December 2024. Throughout this period, the space will evolve with additional elements and ongoing exploration of the collected data. Visitors are encouraged to return multiple times to fully appreciate the evolving experience.

About the project:
The Color of the Horizon is a data-driven audio and visual installation housed in an airstream camper at South River Art Studios. The installation utilizes web cameras placed at locations worldwide where it tracks the sunrise, solar noon, and sunset. These cameras capture color data from the sky, which is then used to dynamically control the lighting inside the camper, simulating a gradient of the daytime sky.

The installation will be open from August to December 2024. Throughout this period, the space will evolve with additional elements and ongoing exploration of the collected data. Visitors are encouraged to return multiple times to fully appreciate the evolving experience.
